When the days get shorter and the rain settles in, a lot of buyers decide to wait until spring.
We understand why. But after more than 30 years of selling homes in Blaine, Birch Bay and Semiahmoo, we’ve seen that winter can be one of the best times to buy, especially if you know what to look for.
Less Competition
Fewer buyers tend to be out looking from November through February. That can mean more time to make a decision, fewer competing offers and a little more room to negotiate.
In spring, a great home can attract a lot of attention quickly. In winter, you may have the chance to see it twice before you decide.
Sellers Who Are Ready to Move
Homes on the market in winter are often listed by sellers with a reason to move: a new job, a family change or a home they’ve already bought somewhere else.
That doesn’t guarantee a better price, but it often means sellers are motivated and open to a conversation.
You See the Home at Its Most Honest
This is one of our favorite reasons to look in winter. A sunny July afternoon shows a home at its best. A rainy December day shows you how it really lives. You can see:
- How the yard and driveway handle heavy rain
- Whether gutters and drainage are doing their job
- How much natural light the home gets on a gray day
- How a waterfront or bluff property holds up when the wind picks up off the bay
- How warm and comfortable the home feels when the heat is on
If you love a home in winter, chances are you’ll love it all year.
Get Settled Before Spring
Buying in winter means you can be moved in and settled by the time the weather turns. You’ll be ready for long walks along Birch Bay Drive, summer evenings at the marina and everything that makes this area special in the warmer months.
A Few Winter Buying Tips
- Plan around the light. Daylight is short, so schedule showings earlier in the day when you can.
- Ask about utility costs. Winter is the perfect time to understand heating bills.
- Don’t skip the inspection. Rain makes it easier to spot roof, drainage and moisture issues.
- Look past the décor. Holiday decorations or an empty home can make rooms look different than they will in spring. Focus on the layout and the bones.
